Adventure 41 - Always Outnumbered, Sometimes Outgunned

As DM Tim heads off to DDXP, the crew discusses the ups and downs of fighting solos (particularly dragons) that we have acquired over the past year and a half.  We'll talk about some ways to make adjustments to your solo monsters as well.  If you're at DDXP, say "Hi!" to Tim; afterall, he's got goodies.

In this adventure, the Radio Free Hommlet crew discuss ways to use computers in your tabletop gaming.  Yes, this is the episode we've been promising since close to the beginning, although nowhere near as in-depth as we intend to do later.  DM Tim presents a build this as well with his Counterpunch Fighter.

This time the RFH crew finishes up our DM trilogy as we talk about the Whats, Whens and Whys of Monster Design.  We also talk about some news from the Reaper folks as well as current contests both here and at Wizard's.  DM David presents some Worldbuilding Feat Design questions and talkthrough to finish the adventure out.

Adventure 36 - Know Their Role

After spending last adventure talking about Campaign and Adventure Design we break it down even smaller as we discuss Encounter Design. We cover "The List" from Order 66 as well as our own observations that are more 4e specific. Both good and bad encounters are discussed here as well as what made them that way. We also have GM David's Worldbuilding Affirmations back with a discussion on creating custom classes for Voidshards.

Adventure 35 - Thinking About Thinking

It's all well and good for Adventurers to go out and complete quests, slay monsters and generally create a ruckus, but there is one person who holds their fates in his hands.  That is The Dungeon Master.  This week we look at Campaign and Adventure design from both the top-down (Grid) perspective as well as the in-the-trenches (you want to do *what*?) view and pick up some tricks along the way to make organizing the PCs lives a little bit better.  Also, a new Build This! featuring a Wilden Druid with a cornucopia of plant-based powers is presented.  Oh...and a new contest from DM Kate.

Adventure 34 - Power to the Primals

Wow...we blather on for quite a bit in this adventure as we discuss Primal Power.  It's full of new builds, new powers, new feats and new fun for all of the primal classes (except Seeker - they'll just have to wait).  We spend a lot of time on the barbarian and some of his new abilites as well as the Ranger's new favorite leader - the Eagle Shaman plus thinking through some new ways of playing the different classes.

Adventure 33 - The Challenge

This adventure takes us on a walk through the Dungeon Master's Guide 2 with an extended stop-off at skill challenges. DMG2 spends a lot of time on this mechanic which has been both loved and hated by DMs since 4th Edition came out 16 months ago, so we do too.  In the Build This! DM Jackson and DM David discuss some of the new content from PHB3 and DDI that is being previewed with a Revenant Assassin whose files can be found here.

Adventure 32 - Well, At MY Table...

This adventure brings us a look at the bane and boon of all DMs - the House Rule.  House rules can fix the gaps that aren't explicitly covered by the RAW or allow extra coolness for your PCs.  The cast of Radio Free Hommlet presents some of the house rules we use on a regular basis as well as some thoughts on how they have developed through the sessions of playing.  We finish up with DM David's Worldbuilding Affirmations as we walk through the creation of custom races for his Voidshards world.

What are all these crazy terms you use?

Like any group of people with a common interest, the Radio Free Hommlet cast has developed certain phrases which we use that you might not be familiar with.  If you’re wondering what any of these are, this is your one stop shop to figure that out.

  • Charisma-din – A Paladin with Charisma as its primary stat.
  • Flings – Nickname for Halflings, despite it also working for Tieflings that isn’t how we think of them.
  • Hell-lock – Nickname for Infernal Pact Warlocks.
  • Laser Cleric – A cleric which focuses on ranged attacks, which are mostly Radiant hence Laser.  This is in contrast to the melee-centric Cleric of 3.5e.
  • MAD – Mutual Attribute Dependency. The situation where a class or build requires more than 2 stats to consistently be strong. For example, attacking on both Strength and Dexterity but using Wisdom as bonus damage for each.
  • NADs  Non-AC Defences (Fortitude, Reflex and Will)
  • RAI – Acronym for Rules as Interpreted or Intended, a reading of the rules that the commentary feels holds closer to the intent of the rule, than the letter.
  • RAW – Acronym for Rules As Written, that is exactly what the book prescribes without interpretation.
  • Santa Clause – Used to describe a power which targets enemies, not creatures.  It knows if you are bad or good.  Get it?
  • Striker-din – A Paladin who focuses on damage, and less on defense.  Making it more a fit for the Striker role than the Defender role.  (see also Charisma-din)
  • Suicide Ranger – A term of endearment for Dual Weapon Rangers, who are often somewhat less durable than they need to be and as such could be said to have a suicidal streak for rushing into melee.

Did we miss something?  We hardly know we use these, so send us an email to newsdesk@hommlet.com if we say something and you’re like … a what?

Adventure 31 - An Answer to Prayer

In this adventure, the fearless (well, mostly, ok...sometimes) hosts of Radio Free Hommlet take a walk through Divine Power .  The Map Room contains an in-depth look at the new options presented to Clerics and Paladins as well as an brief glance at what is now available for the other divine classes.  There's also a quick Newsdesk as we cover what's just out and what's coming up.  The Build This! covers a new Paladin brought to us by DM Tim whose files can be found here.

Adventure 30 - God says NO

In this adventure we finally finish up the PHB2 classes as we discuss the Avenger.  He's a divine striker that can really lay down the hurt if his party is willing to give him half a chance - and even if they aren't.  We also have a Build This! by DM Jackson and DM David on a Gnome Warden inspired by a new mini from Reaper.  More information on this characer as well as his character builder files can be found here(As a note from DM Kate who does the editing, the first part of the Build This! is kinda rough since I left them to record while I went elsewhere to edit.  I think the recording computer felt slighted because the second half where I was watching it is much smoother.)  There's a mini-contest mentioned (as in "small" not as in "minis") and the general amount of shenanagains of your four hosts.

Adventure 29 - GenCon Thoughts

This adventure brings us home again after a GenCon filled with stress, announcements, products, good games and bad.  The Map Room covers a lot of the various RPGA adventures that we played - kinda review, but also a look at some things to do or not to do in design or running a game.  But if you're looking for more than just our Brain Dump, check out DM David's Worldbuilding Affirmations, where he and DM Jackson cover how various races can be made to fit into his Voidshards universe.

Despite catastrophe in the land of Hommlet, our brave adventurers journey forth as we take a walk through Arcane Power.  We look at some of the new build options, paragon paths, feats and other toys available for arcane classes.  Our wizards feel much better.  Our sorcerers see potential.  And everyone wants a little friend.  Also, DM David chats with DM Tim on his Worldbuilding Affirmations as well.  See you at GenCon.

And maybe next time we'll have our intros back.

Adventure 27 - The Druid

The personal polymorphing primal controller strikes this adventure as we tackle the Druid from PHB2.  Also, DM David and DM Jackson continue talking about Voidshards (see Adventure 26 if you need to catch up) in his Worldbuilding Affirmations; and we steal a segment from Order 66 where they announce the winners of the Reaper Miniatures painting contest.  Also, there's a Newsdesk with new releases, what we're going to be up to at GenCon,  plus a reminder to go vote for the Ennies (polls close 1 August!) as well as how to find us on Twitter.

All this, crammed into a little over an hour of listening enjoyment.

Adventure 26 - Barbarian

In this adventure we encounter the Barbarian.  We have a special guest of ReaperBryan from Reaper Miniatures sitting in with us as we cover this primal striker (with defender hit points and a minion propulsion system).  DM David also kicks off a new chapter in his Worldbuilding Affirmations as he works through the process of building a completely new campaign setting with DM Jackson as his first helper.

A note of warning: the volume on this one is rather soft.  Apparently DM Kate got a little carried away on setting levels and forgot to balance between all the parts.

Adventure 18 - Monster Mash

Working in the lab, late one night, RFH beheld a dreary sight.  A Brain in a Jar began to rise, and suddenly to our surprise...

It did a Map Room!

As you've guessed, this adventure's Map Room takes a trip through the Monster Manual (and some other books) as the Radio Free Hommlet cast talks about their favorite monsters, monster roles, and using monsters from a DM perspective as well as killing them.  In addition to the Newsdesk, this adventure features a brand new segment called Build This! where cast members (in this case DM Tim and DM Jackson) create and level a character up through level 10.

Adventure 16 - Rules You Think You Know

This adventure includes an informal interview with some of the DMs from DDXP regarding the rules their players have most often misunderstood.  The conversation veers off in several places in true Tim and Kate style.  Due to the open nature of this interview, the audio is fairly soft (except for DM Tim).

This is the last of the DDXP podcasts - next time the full cast is back to discuss Paragon Paths.

This marks DM Kate's first attempt editing the podcast, so the requisite apologies go out for burbles and mistakes that DM Tim would usually have corrected (but I think I got them all - maybe).
